Another fresh dozen quad badge moments hit NBA Top Shot over the last month. Some players with a lesser role than others, but still graced with the beauty of the quad badges on their initial moments. In part 1, we ranked the first wave of 13 Rookie Debuts, today let’s rank the latest 12 members to join the Quad Badge Qliq.
In the rankings we are looking at the play itself, jsut the moment. I try to remove the player making the play out of the moment as much as possible to truly focus on the quality of the moment.
12. Bryce McGowens
This is listed as a block and it is a somewhat clever little pick pocket style, sneak block. If you blink you miss it and you really have to watch it once to even know it is coming. If nothing else, it is a unique play unlike anything else we have on Top Shot.
11. Jake Laravia
Truth be told I am not a huge fan of long pass moments on Top Shot. The reason being a lot of the moment is just the ball going through the air. There are a couple that aren’t bad like the Lonzo and the LeBron, but this moment at least holds with a nice steal to kick it off first, then into a long pass with a nice finish.
10. Max Christie
It’s a Laker and it is a first bucket along with the nice narrative that it is against the world champs. There is not a ton here outside of it being the first bucket, which is special of itself, but it is a clean, pure NBA triple.
9. Caleb Houstan
This is a nice tight defensive play, I just wish the block had a little more explosion beyond the finger tips. That being said I love the close up of the tight defense going into a solid block of Bojan going up for the layup. A young player going out showing solid fundamentals in his game.
8. Malaki Branham
If I was taking the player into account, I would be shooting Malaki up higher, because I just love his upside. This is a smooth catch and shoot 3, that the moment just keeps flipping through on repeat from slightly different perspectives. I like the little bit of swagger at the end of the clip letting you know he knows. Also, it gets the first bucket of the career bump.
7. A.J. Griffin
The real AJ Griffin moment we all want looks like it is coming in For The Win. Another moment with the quick catch and shoot 3 for the first bucket of his career here. Dejounte has a nice touch with a smooth pass across and I’ve got this just above Malaki for the bench hype, the slight pose and the thumbnail. The little extras go a long way in moments for me.
6. Keegan Murray
The third moment in a row of future stars with a catch and shoot 3 for their first bucket, the Fox pass really makes this moment. The little spin pass through the defenders to where Murray comes to spot up for the triple is a true highlight play.
5. Dyson Daniels
This is a complete assist play with a lot of little intricacies to catch. Dyson catches the swing pass, immediately showcases his speed with the ball. He hits the lane with a little fake toss and drops the over the head pass for the layup finish. This was one I enjoyed more and more as I watched it each time. This wasn’t an easy play and was pulled off in a lot of traffic, which makes the pass stand out even more to me.
4. Kennedy Chandler
We hit the top 4 and start to enter the cream of the crop territory. This block is just silly. The height, the power, it is all there. It reminds me of another Grizzlies player in Ja who frequently puts up block highlights like this. Chandler gets serious fly time here and swats it strong off the backboard. What makes it even sweeter is the second little fly swat block to finish the moment off. A really top notch block play with quad badges at a nice price.
3. Tari Eason
This is a pure hammer. Tari is running the floor, and glides right to the rim. Dejounte thought better of challenging him and winding up getting postered. I also like the rim cam perspective on this dunk for a nice touch. It really showcases the throwdown (see what I did there).
2. Jabari Walker
A complete play here. Jabari goes coast to coast, mixes in a little behind the back dribble, splits through 2 defenders and throws it up off the glass. It is a strong take and to me this is what a quad badge moment really should be for a debut player. It is a memorable play that will stand out among the rest.
- Jalen Duren
My goodness this dunk. Wave 1 had the Paolo hammer and right now I don’t know which one I would put over the other. This Duren poster dunk is an absolute monster. There is raw power, he fights through the challenge and just throws it down as hard as he can. Bey is hyped on the bench and Duren gives you the pure emotion after knowing what he just did to that man. Take the fact he is a budding star big man out of this and you still have one of the best dunks of Series 4 sitting here.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Rookie Debut set and have turned into a big fan that this was broken out into its own set. Right now as we hit All-Star weekend, we have 25 quad badge moments, with 2 absolute slams holding the top spot of each wave. I’m going to put a master ranking list coming up, but can’t wait to see the 2nd half of rookie moments we get to finish out the set.
Unit next time, we ride at dawn.
